Low Libido

It is a common problem for women, and it is often the result of many different conditions or a side effect from certain medications. At Marietta OB-GYN Affiliates, P.A. our doctors are here to help you find the treatment you need in order to increase your sexual desire and to make sex easier and more enjoyable.

For many women, hormones play a huge role in their libido. Whether it is during menopause, pregnancy, after pregnancy, or another time where their hormones are fluctuating at high levels, being able to regulate hormones can often give a big boost to the sex drive. Estrogen and testosterone levels that fluctuate on a drastic scale can have significant affects on a woman’s sex drive. These changes can lead to women not being easily aroused, causing them to become less interested in sex. Hormonal changes can also cause a drop in blood supply to the vagina that affects vaginal lubrication, causing sex to become very uncomfortable. These huge swings in hormones are most notable during and after pregnancy and during menopause. At Marietta OB-GYN Affiliates, P.A. we offer hormone replacement therapy for women who have a hormonal imbalance that is affecting their lives.

Stress is another common cause of low libido. Stress at home, work, or in relationships can affect many different areas of a person’s life. Stress often decreases the body’s ability to do many things well, including digestion and sleep, and it can take its toll on a person’s skin, hair, nails – and, yes, sex drive. Learning how to handle stress in a healthy manner can help you in many different areas of life.

Certain medications are known to turn down a person’s level of desire. Antidepressants, blood pressure medications, birth control pills, and chemotherapy are the most common types of medications that have been shown to lower libido.

Being overweight and/or having a poor body image are known sex drive killers. Women who need to lose a significant amount of weight often find that they do not enjoy sex because they cannot perform the way they want to. Many women are also held back from engaging in sex because of a low self-esteem regarding how their bodies look. Working on how you feel about yourself and working on losing weight can do significant things to improve your libido.

Depression is also a cause of low libido. Being depressed can shut off pleasure from many things, including sex. It is very important for women to open up to their doctors about feelings of depression because of how it can negatively affect many different aspects of your life.
