Perimenopause

Menopause is a natural occurrence in a women’s life when the reproductive years have come to an end. Perimenopause means “around menopause” – because there are many changes that occur before and during menopause, which cannot be pinpointed to a specific date. Before true menopause sets in, a woman’s body will experience uneven spikes and falls in their estrogen levels. These drastic changes bring forth many symptoms, some of which are more difficult to deal with than others.

Common symptoms associated with perimenopause are:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood swings
  • Weight changes
  • Lowered metabolism
  • Loss of sexual interest (libido)
  • Urinary disturbances
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Chest pains
  • Infertility
  • Aches and pains in the joints that were not problems before

Menopause is a normal phase of life for women, and some women experience fewer symptoms than others. Perimenopause is the same, in that some women do not experience symptoms until true menopause is fully in effect. Each woman has her own level of estrogen in her body, which affects how her body handles the changes of growing older.

Some women seek medical attention for their perimenopausal symptoms, while others choose to try a natural approach to dealing with the changes. Any symptoms that interfere with your life or well-being should be brought to your doctor’s attention. There is no award for making it through menopause without medical intervention, so please seek help should you need assistance during these times of drastic changes.
