Placenta Donation

Marietta GA New Mom Kissing Her Baby

One of the most necessary elements of your baby’s growth and development is inside your uterus. The placenta is the organ that connects a developing baby to the uterine wall in order to provide oxygen and nutrients and to remove waste products from the baby’s blood. The placenta is a major component of a healthy pregnancy, but it also has the potential to help others once your baby is born.

There are multiple cellular components found in placental tissue. The amniotic membrane, which makes up the innermost part of the placenta, has been used for a wide range of procedures including eye surgery, spine surgery, and for the treatment of difficult to heal wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure ulcers (bed sores), and burns.

Expectant mothers who are going to undergo a planned Caesarean section delivery can donate their placenta after their baby has been delivered. There is no age limit for placenta donation. As long as the placenta is healthy, given from a healthy mother, and there are no disqualifying medical conditions, women whose doctors are participating members of MiMedx’s Placenta Donation Program can contribute.

At Marietta OB-GYN Affiliates, P.A., we are proud members of WellStar Kennestone Hospital who have partnered with Surgical Biologics to provide expectant mothers the opportunity to donate the placenta after the birth of her baby. The process poses no risk to the mother or her baby because the placenta is not recovered until after the Cesarean section delivery. Because a woman is already under anesthesia from her Cesarean, there is no pain in the procedure.

Many women are beyond thankful and blessed that they have been given the gift of new life in their growing baby, and they want to “pay it forward.” If you would like more information regarding how you can let your placenta be a gift of life to someone else, please ask the physicians at Marietta OB-GYN Affiliates, P.A. for more information.
