What’s covered by my insurance?

Many health plans are very specific when it comes to services and medications that are covered. This can also vary tremendously even within plans provided by a specific carrier (i.e. Blue Cross, Cigna, etc.) and by the type of plan you have (HMO, POS, PPO, etc.) This can also have a tremendous impact on referrals, precertifications, etc.

Medications are often listed in what is called a formulary. For the up to date list, you can contact your insurance company.

The most common things that you should contact your insurance company about to see if they are covered would include the following:

  • Contraceptive Benefits – Birth control pills, injectable contraception (Depo-provera), sterilization (tubal ligation or vasectomy), IUD (intra-uterine device)
  • Routine Gynecologic Visits
  • Screening Mammograms and Bone Density Testing
  • Obstetrical Care
  • Infertility – this would be very specific for diagnostic testing, specific treatments, and referral to infertility specialists
