Abnormal Bleeding

Marietta GA Gynecologoists

Abnormal vaginal bleeding is defined as bleeding that occurs when women are not expected to be on their period, a menstrual flow that is heavier than normal, or when a woman is pregnant or has already gone through menopause. Many women experience some type of abnormal bleeding, and there are many possible causes.

Women who are pregnant and who experience any type of spotting or bleeding should always seek their doctor’s evaluation. Light bleeding during the early part of pregnancy is often considered normal, but should still be evaluated. Heavy vaginal bleeding may indicate a serious problem including miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or placenta previa.

Some women experience spotting during their ovulation cycles which causes bleeding to occur in between periods. Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormone imbalance that interferes with normal ovulation and can cause abnormal bleeding. A diagnosis is required from a gynecologist to determine if this is the cause of mid-cycle abnormal bleeding.

Medications, intrauterine devices, infections, or pelvic inflammatory disease can also cause abnormal bleeding to occur. Less common causes which may be more serious include uterine fibroids, cancer, extreme stress or exercise, or sexual abuse.

A gynecologist can evaluate the duration, interval, and amount of vaginal bleeding to help determine what is responsible for this issue. Treatment for abnormal vaginal bleeding depends on the underlying cause. A careful diagnosis is needed to rule out dangerous causes and to determine if the condition warrants medication or intervention.
