Excess Stress and Your Cycle

The female hormonal system controls your period, and excess stress can upset the balance of both your mind and body. Many women experience abnormal menstrual cycles with different contributing factors, but the impact of stress is often an overlooked contribution. It is necessary to understand the correlation between your stress level and the role it plays in your reproductive function.

The body is designed to release the hormones adrenaline and cortisol. These are naturally released when the body experiences stress, excitement, or strong emotions. When the body is under prolonged stress, the brain tries to determine how it can conserve energy, and it decreases “nonessential” functions within the body. Unfortunately, the brain considers a woman’s reproductive system as “nonessential.” Therefore, when the body is under excess stress, the brain goes into survival mode and signals to your body to stop or slow the production of estrogen and progesterone. These are the female hormones that determine a regular, 28-day menstrual cycle.

Irregular periods show up in different ways. Some women stop having their menstrual cycle altogether; others experience spotting before their period and then a lighter period; while some may only get their period every 2-3 months. Any consistency in abnormal menstrual cycles should be discussed with your physician.

Your body was designed to work well without you putting a whole lot of effort into it. With a healthy diet, proper sleep, and moderate exercise, the body should function properly. However, when the body is not getting one of these factors, the body can experience excess stress and begin to shut down in certain areas.
