Exercising During Pregnancy

It is common knowledge that exercise benefits everyone and is a crucial part of overall health, but it is not as well known that expectant mothers should also exercise throughout their pregnancy. In general, mothers-to-be who engage in regular exercise have a healthier pregnancy than those who do not.

There are a number of notable benefits to exercising during pregnancy that are supportive of both mother and fetus. They are:

  • Possible reduction in the risk for gestational diabetes – regular exercise improves the overall health of a pregnant woman and can stabilize blood glucose levels to make for a better pregnancy outcome.
  • Relieves constipation – an elevation in progesterone causes food to pass along the digestive tract more slowly. The movement and stimulation of exercise speeds food through the intestines and out of the body.
  • Keeps weight gain in check – weight gain is normal and expected during pregnancy. Exercising about three times per week can deter too much weight gain and help expectant moms get back to their pre-pregnancy weight more quickly.
  • Minimizes back pain and swelling – back pain and swelling are among the most common complaints of pregnancy. Exercise is proven to offer relief for these conditions.
  • Possible avoidance of a C-Section – women who exercise while pregnant are far less likely to need intervention during delivery.
  • Lowers the risk for preeclampsia – a leading contributor to early birth is preeclampsia, a condition that causes high blood pressure and protein in urine.
  • Improves sleep – as a pregnant woman’s body grows and changes, sleep becomes more elusive. Working out speeds the process of falling asleep and can contribute to better, more restorative sleep.
  • Delivery may be improved – physical fitness has been positively linked to a better labor and delivery.

Walking, swimming, and yoga are all excellent and generally safe during pregnancy, however there are some health circumstances where women would be advised to discontinue exercise during the pregnancy. Problems are not likely, but refrain from exercise and consult with a doctor in the event of fluid coming from the vagina, vaginal bleeding, contractions, or decreased movement from the baby.

Pregnancy is an ideal time to begin or continue an exercise routine. Maintaining a healthy diet and staying physically active are important ways for expectant moms to care for themselves and their growing baby.
