Giving Birth by Cesarean Section

OBGYN near Acworth GA

When a baby is delivered surgically rather than vaginally, it is called Cesarean section. The doctor will make necessary incisions in the wall of the abdomen and uterus to pull the baby from the womb. Cesarean sections, commonly called C-sections, are performed when a vaginal delivery is not possible for a number of different reasons. Though a C-section can be scheduled, many happen urgently when complications arise. Situations that require a C-section include:

  • The baby is too big to pass through the vaginal canal.
  • The mother has diabetes or high blood pressure.
  • The baby is in a breech position.
  • The mother has a transferrable disease, such as herpes.
  • There are twins, triplets, or multiple babies in the womb.
  • The baby goes into fetal distress.
  • The umbilical cord twists or flattens during labor.
  • The placenta separates from the uterus.
  • The baby has a medical condition or birth defect.
  • Labor slows down and/or stops.

If it is decided that an expectant mom will deliver via C-section to safeguard her health or her baby’s, the caring staff at Marietta OB-GYN Affiliates, P.A. will work with her to develop a custom plan. Most women will be given epidural or spinal anesthesia. This will keep her awake, but numb her from the neck down. After the procedure, many patients are very sore in the abdomen and will need someone to help with care, lifting, and feeding of the new baby. New moms who deliver by C-section are advised not to lift anything heavy for several weeks and to refrain from strenuous activities and exercise.
