Internal Ultrasound

Internal Ultrasound Marietta, GAWhile ultrasound imaging is used to create pictures of the inside of the body, it is often necessary to use a transvaginal ultrasound to examine the female reproductive organs. This type of internal ultrasound allows doctors to view the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina in a more detailed manner. A doctor or technician uses an ultrasound probe, inserting it into the vaginal cavity to create images of the female system.

An internal ultrasound is done in-office to determine causes behind certain issues, to monitor early pregnancy, or for the placement of an IUD. The most common reasons why an internal ultrasound is performed are:

  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • An abnormal pelvic or abdominal exam
  • An ectopic pregnancy
  • Infertility
  • Checking for cysts or uterine fibroids
  • Proper placement of an IUD
  • Monitor the heartbeat of a fetus
  • Identify probable causes that could lead to complications during pregnancy
  • Examine the placenta for abnormalities
  • Identify source of bleeding during pregnancy
  • Diagnose possible miscarriage

In most cases, there is no preparation necessary for an internal ultrasound; however, there are certain times when a full bladder is necessary. An internal ultrasound is mostly a painless procedure, although it can be somewhat uncomfortable if certain issues are present. There may be some pressure felt as the ultrasound probe is slowly moved around, but ultrasound technicians are generally very gentle and take care to move the probe slowly and with as little pressure possible.
