Letting Diaphragms Work for You

Marietta GA Gynecologists

When it comes to contraception, diaphragms are among the oldest methods of birth control. A diaphragm is a small, flexible cup that is placed directly in the vagina to prevent sperm from reaching an egg. Diaphragms are made of silicone or latex, and are used in combination with spermicide. The most important thing to remember to ensure that your diaphragm works for you is that using it properly is imperative. Diaphragms are considered 94% effective in preventing pregnancy when they are used correctly.

The benefits of letting diaphragms work for you include:

  • Diaphragms are considered to be a natural form of birth control
  • There are no hormones associated with diaphragms
  • There is no need to remember to take a pill every day
  • Can be used while breastfeeding
  • If you decide that you want to try to conceive, you can begin trying immediately by simply not using a diaphragm
  • Won’t interrupt intimacy because it can be placed an hour before sex

There are many forms of contraception methods to choose from, and together you and your doctor can determine which method is best for you.

There are important things that you must remember in order for your diaphragm to work as effectively as possible.

  • A diaphragm must be used in conjunction with spermicide
  • A diaphragm can be inserted up to 6 hours before sex, and it must be left in place at least 6 hours after sex
  • Spermicides are only effective for up to an hour; therefore, more spermicide gel must be used appropriately
  • A diaphragm must not be left in longer than 23 consecutive hours as an extended use will put you at risk for toxic shock syndrome
  • Oil-based lubricants cannot be used as they can weaken or damage the diaphragm over time
