Metabolism Through The Ages

Metabolism – the bodily processes needed to maintain life.

As women, we all know that our bodies go through many shapes and stages as we age. Our breasts grow and gradually may begin to sag. Our bellies have the ability to expand and contract through pregnancy and aging. These are just a few of the changes that happen to us as women. One part of your body that changes, but not visibly, is your metabolism. While we can see the effects of our metabolism, we cannot physically view our metabolic rate.

As you age, less energy is needed for your body to function. Your body transitions from a stage of growth to a stage of aging. Right alongside this transition your human growth hormones also lower. In addition to these factors, as you age you have less muscle (especially if you are physically inactive). Muscles have a big part in determining your metabolic activity, so the tradeoff is to lose muscle but gain weight in exchange.  If you want to increase your metabolic rate it’s important to build muscle.

Signs That Your Metabolism is Slowing Down

  1. Lack of energy (tired)
  2. Feeling down or unfocused
  3. Weight gain
  4. Skin issues
  5. Hair loss
  6. Irregular menstrual symptoms
