Multifetal Pregnancy

Marietta OBGYNsMultifetal pregnancies include pregnancies where women are carrying more than one baby during a single pregnancy. Multifetal pregnancies include twins, triplets, quadruplets, and higher-order multiples. Twin and triplet pregnancies are often natural occurrences due to heredity and/or a mother’s age at conception. While all pregnancies are special and require specific care, multifetal pregnancies are treated as high-risk pregnancies because there are more lives involved. At Marietta OB/GYN Affiliates, P.A. we offer complete obstetrical services, including high-risk obstetrics to the residents of Marietta, Cobb County, and the surrounding areas.

Women who are pregnancy with multiples will see their health care provider on a more frequent basis. These visits are necessary to track the babies’ growth and development, to monitor the health and weight of the mother, and to watch for signs of preterm labor. Healthy multifetal pregnancies are achieved every day, however there are some complications that occur more frequently when multiples are involved. Mothers of multiples are more likely to develop high blood pressure, thus, careful management is needed to prevent serious complications for both mother and babies. Premature birth is also more frequent among women carrying multiples, and any signs of preterm labor will be dealt with aggressively in order to lengthen the time babies have to develop in the womb.
