Choosing whether or not to have children, or to have more children, is a very personal decision and one that should not be made flippantly. Some women who are not 100% positive that they do not want to have children in the future often choose a birth control method that has extended results but that can be easily reversed. However, for women who have come to the conclusion that having children is not part of their future, there are permanent birth control options available. At Marietta OB-GYN Affiliates, P.A. we offer Tubal Ligation as a permanent birth control option for our patients.
Tubal ligation, commonly referred to as “having the tubes tied,” is a type of permanent birth control. This permanent birth control is done by cutting the fallopian tubes so that they are permanently blocked in order to prevent pregnancy. A tubal ligation disrupts the movement of the egg to the uterus for fertilization and blocks sperm from travelling up the fallopian tube and fertilizing the egg. A tubal ligation can be done at any time, and is often done in combination with another abdominal surgical procedure such as a cesarean section.
It is incredibly important that women fully understand what a tubal ligation is and that it is a permanent form of birth control. While it is possible to reverse a tubal ligation, the reversal requires major surgery and is not always effective. Therefore, tubal ligation is considered to be permanent.
