Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are diseases that are passed from person to person through unprotected and liberal sexual encounters. Even with the numerous research that has been published and taught to patients since the 1980s, sexually transmitted diseases are still a common occurrence among women today. There are numerous sexually transmitted diseases and the consequences of untreated STDs can be very serious for women. The most common STDs for women include Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes, Genital Warts, Trichomonas, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, and HIV/AIDS. Women who have any signs or symptoms of an STD should be seen by their gynecologist right away. Signs and symptoms include: vaginal discharge, painful urination, pelvic pain, tender blisters on the vaginal skin, itchy or non-itchy bumps on the vaginal skin, abdominal discomfort, flu-like symptoms, and foul discharge. Diagnosis of an STD requires an examination of the vagina, cervix, and pelvic organs, and cell samples will be taken to determine if an STD is present. For some women, more than one STD can be present at a time, so several tests may be necessary to determine what diseases have been contracted. Antibiotic and antiviral medications can be given to treat some STDs, in-office treatments can be given to treat genital warts, and HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B will require a specialist’s intervention.
