Succesful VBAC

OBGYN Office in Marietta GA

A cesarean section, also known as a c-section, is a surgical procedure to deliver babies. C-sections can be planned, but most are often done due to unexpected problems during pregnancy or during labor, which could put the mother or baby at risk. According to the National Center for Health Services, 31.9% of all deliveries are done via c-section in the United States. Some women with subsequent pregnancies choose to undergo a repeated c-section; however, many women wish to deliver their next baby vaginally. VBAC, or vaginal birth after cesarean delivery, is not a delivery option that every obstetrician can perform. Consequently, a high-risk pregnancy specialist is needed. At Marietta OB/GYN Affiliates, P.A., we are a comprehensive Obstetrics and Gynecology practice that includes six experienced OB/GYN physicians and a dedicated Registered Nurse, Clinical Nurse Practitioner. Our physicians support women who want to try VBAC.

According to American Pregnancy, 90% of women who have undergone cesarean deliveries are candidates for VBAC. On average, 60-80% of women who attempt a VBAC succeed. This number is dependent on your provider and other circumstances. There are also ways to improve your chances for a successful VBAC.

The following factors can increase your odds for success when choosing a VBAC:

  • Younger than 34 years of age
  • Healthy and not overweight
  • Diligent weight management throughout pregnancy to avoid having a large baby
  • No high blood pressure
  • Have had at least one vaginal birth before your last c-section
  • At least 18 months have passed since your previous c-section
  • You deliver at 40 weeks or earlier
  • You have no obstetric concerns (i.e., fibroids or placenta previa)
  • You have created a birth plan

At Marietta OB/GYN Affiliates, P.A., we are here to support mothers who are interested in attempting a VBAC. Our primary concern during any type of delivery is the health of both the mother and the baby. Our dedicated doctors are available to consult with you and discuss these factors and determine the best delivery solution for you and your baby. We look forward to caring for you during this very special time in your life.
