Diseases that are transmitted sexually, known as STDs, are infections that are passed between people through sexual touch. Common ways that STDs are transferred is through kissing, sexual intercourse, and oral contact with genitals. An STD can be caused by a virus, bacteria, yeast, or a parasite. Having an STD is a serious condition and can have a far-reaching impact on long-term health. Pregnant women can pass the infection to their babies. Some STDs are more common and infect a large number of people. It is wise to know some basic information about STDs in order to practice prevention and to recognize tell-tale signs.

Genital Herpes
Small blisters form around the genitals, rectum, or mouth and are sometimes accompanied by flu-like symptoms. Herpes is spread through sexual contact with a person who has the virus. Protective measures to prevent the spread of genital herpes includes wearing a condom during sex and abstaining from sex during an outbreak.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
HPV is the most common infection that is transmitted sexually. It often causes no symptoms and is therefore spread because carriers are unaware they have it, though it sometimes causes genital or anal warts. There are more than a hundred strains of HPV and only a few can lead to cancer. Cervical cells infected with HPV may become abnormal in the presence of the virus. HPV is best treated early with diagnosis during a routine Pap smear.
Chlamydia
Signs of chlamydia include vaginal itching, vaginal and anal discharge, fever, pain during sex, and burning during urination. It affects the cervix, urethra, rectum and throat. Chlamydia has been linked to infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease. Treatment for Chlamydia is with antibiotics.
Gonorrhea
Caused by bacteria, Gonorrhea thrives in warm, moist areas and causes painful discharge, burning in the throat, abdominal pain, and vaginal bleeding. Like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea is treated with oral or injectable antibiotics and is found during STD screening.
