The Role of Fish Oil in Women’s Health

Fish Oil supplements have been in the news a lot lately and chances are, you have heard of their tremendous health benefits. This is because fish oil supplements contain Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA). Studies have shown that getting an adequate intake of Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce joint pain, stress and your risk for heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to benefit the health of your arteries and can boost the immune systems of young children and help with their brain development. However, you may not be aware of the fact that Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of both menstrual cramps and hot flashes in women in some studies. While the evidence is not conclusive at this time, this important topic definitely requires further investigation!

Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in a variety of foods including certain types of seafood, flaxseed, hempseed oil, walnuts, canola oil, eggs, pumpkin seeds and marine microalgae.  Since it is difficult to get an adequate intake of Omega-3 fatty acids through your diet alone, several companies have started manufacturing fish oil supplements. However, it is important to be careful when shopping for supplements. Supplements are not currently regulated by the FDA and can vary widely in their composition as well as their effectiveness. That is why it is important to get a recommendation from your doctor before purchasing or taking any fish oil supplements.

There are currently a number of treatments that are available to treat both menstrual cramps and hot flashes including many hormonal therapies. However, many women do not want to take hormones due to the fear of side effects or safety concerns. If you are suffering from menstrual cramps and/or hot flashes and are looking for a natural supplement to help reduce your symptoms, talk to your doctor today about fish oil supplements and how to acquire more Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet.
