Trying to Get Pregnant in 2016

Marietta GA OBGYN PracticeMany couples like to begin a new year thinking of all the possibilities that a new year can bring. One of the biggest possibilities is deciding that it is time to expand your family. The most popular month to deliver a baby is September, leading many to believe that the New Year is a popular conception time. While many women are able to get pregnant without a word of advice or even “trying,” there are still some tips to help those who are trying to get pregnant in 2016.

  • See your physician. While there is no need to be concerned unless you have ben trying to conceive for a year or more (or six months, if you are over the age of 35), it is always a good idea to make sure everything is in proper working condition before trying to get pregnant. An annual exam can help you and your doctor know how things are with your female anatomy, your weight, blood sugar levels, cholesterol, that your immunizations are up to date, and more. You can also discuss with your doctor any factors that could lead to pregnancy complications.
  • Take your prenatal vitamins. It is best to begin taking prenatal vitamins at least two months before you begin trying to conceive. When taken before pregnancy and during the early weeks of pregnancy, folic acid has been show to greatly decrease the risk of neural tube defects.
  • See your dentist. Periodontal disease has been directly linked to preterm and underweight babies. Ensuring that your gums, teeth, and mouth are healthy can promote a healthy pregnancy and growing baby.
  • Have sex! While this seems obvious, there is really only a 20% chance that you will conceive with each ovulation. There is typically only a three-day window of fertility with each menstrual cycle. The more often you have sex during the month, the greater chance you will have at conceiving. If you know when you ovulate, then you can increase the amount of sex you have during this time to improve your odds.
