What You Need To Know About Vaginal Discharge

Every woman deals with it, yet it is not something that most women readily discuss with others. Vaginal discharge is a normal part of being female as it is the body’s natural method of cleaning “down there.” Vaginal discharge is a mixture of cells produced by the vagina and cervix and the changes those cells go through while exiting the female body. The composition, amount, and odor of discharge responds to the hormonal levels’ rise and fall, arousal, and reproductive development. Most vaginal discharge represents normal bodily functions and is no cause of concern.

Normal vaginal discharge has the following characteristics:

  • Thin
  • Watery consistency
  • Clear
  • White
  • Sticky
  • Low odor

As the female body goes through hormonal shifts each month, the consistency and composition of vaginal discharge will change also. A woman may experience all types of vaginal discharge as described above throughout a single month.

The cause of concern in vaginal discharge occurs when any of the following are present:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Pain
  • Strong odor
  • Change in color
  • Heavy amount of discharge
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
