Early in pregnancy, ultrasounds can be used to determine your due date and to determine if you are carrying more than one fetus. At around week 20 of your pregnancy, an ultrasound may enable you to know the sex of your baby, if you want to know. Later in your pregnancy, ultrasounds may be used to monitor the health of the baby, determine the location of the placenta, determine the amount of amniotic fluid around the baby, determine the position of the baby and determine the baby’s approximate weight. In some cases, an ultrasound may be used to detect major anatomical abnormalities or birth defects.
