Incompetent Cervix

High Risk Pregnancy OBGYNs Marietta GADuring pregnancy, there are many natural occurrences that women go through as their bodies grow a baby (or babies) and get ready to deliver. One of these occurrences is the change in the cervix. Before pregnancy, the cervix is closed and rigid, changing only slightly when menstruation occurs. However, during the progression of pregnancy the cervix gradually softens, shortens, and begins to open in order to prepare for delivery. For most women, these changes occur late in the third trimester when they are close to their due dates. However, for some women, the cervix begins to open very early. This is called an incompetent cervix, and it can be extremely dangerous to the baby because of premature delivery. At Marietta OB-GYN Affiliates, P.A. we are a highly qualified staff of doctors and a registered nurse, clinical nurse practitioner that is highly trained to manage pregnancies for patients with an incompetent cervix.

Much care is given to all of our patients, but for those who are considered to be “high risk,” we offer the specialized treatment that they need. Our entire team is committed to giving both excellent medical care and sensitivity with compassion to the women in our practice. We are highly capable of diagnosing a weak cervix early on during pregnancy because we continually look for any signs that would compromise a healthy pregnancy. At Marietta OB-GYN Affiliates, P.A. we offer a treatment procedure for incompetent cervix called a Cerclage. This procedure involves sewing the cervix closed with strong sutures in order to keep the cervix from opening prematurely. Limiting sexual and physical activities is also highly recommended so that no extra pressure is placed upon the cervix that would cause it to open.

If you are looking for a qualified OB-GYN practice that caters to the specific needs of patients, Marietta OB-GYN Affiliates, P.A. is the practice that you are looking for. Our high-risk pregnancy care sets the standard in prenatal care, and we would be proud to welcome you into our practice. Contact our office today to schedule an appointment.
